Obituary for S. Kenneth Tarby

S. Kenneth  Tarby
Stephen Kenneth Tarby, 82, of Bethlehem, PA passed away at home on November 2, 2016. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Gloria (Zupko) Tarby. Born in Braddock, PA on July 15, 1934, he was the son of the late Stephen E. and Ruby (Loughner) Tarby. After Ken received his B.S. (56), M.S. (59), and Ph.D. (62) in Metallurgical Engineering from Carnegie Institute of Technology and serving in the U.S. Army Corp of Engineering Nuclear Power Program at the Atomic Energy Commission, he came to teach at Lehigh University for 41 years. During those years he served as Interim Chair twice, and 20 years as Associate Chair in the Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering. His leadership was recognized by his appointment to the R.D. Stout Professorship in 1995. In 1984 and 1998 his dedication to teaching and his positive and caring influence on his students were acknowledged by receiving the College of Engineering Teaching Excellence Award. He was a member of the Iron & Steel Society of AIME, ASM International and Sigma Xi. Ken retired Professor Emeritus in 2002. He was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Bethlehem, PA singing in the choir, serving on a variety of committees and using his love of numbers and spreadsheets to assist the Church Treasurer for many years. His voice could also be heard in the Concord Chamber Singers.

Survivors: wife; son, Mark and his wife Debra (Nemeth) of Farmingdale, NJ; daughter, Gretchen, of Bethlehem, PA; and two granddaughters, Briana Tarby and her husband Nicholas Citro of Colchester, CT and Rebecca Tarby of New York City.

Services: Funeral Services Saturday, November 12, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Trinity Episcopal Church, 44 East Market St., Bethlehem, PA 18018. Calling Hours 1:00 – 2:00 PM in the church and immediately following the service in the Parish Hall.
