Obituary for Henry Carl Petzel

Henry Carl  Petzel
Henry Carl Petzel 95, of Newport, Rhode Island, formerly of Bethlehem, PA, died June 24, 2016 at the Newport, RI Hospital of natural causes. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Arthur Paul Petzel and Bertha E. Petzel. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II in a special New York City harborpost security section. He graduated Northeast High School, an all-male school, and in 1948, Temple University in Philadelphia, PA with a degree in Business Administration. The Principal of Henry C. Petzel Associates, Management-Human Resources Consultants in Nantucket, MA and Bethlehem, PA, he retired in 1990. He was previously employed as Human Resource Manager at RCA Service Company, JC Penny Headquarters and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Hospital. A member of the Central Moravian Church of Bethlehem, PA, he held church positions as President of Board of Elders, President of Trustees, and Church Treasurer in other Christian denominational churches in Syosset, NY and Nantucket, MA. He was a member of Rotary International for 19 years, Rotary Bulletin Editor for 5 years; Director of the Preservation Institute, Nantucket and a member of the Nantucket Yacht Club. His avocations included tennis, sailing and art. He attended the Art Student League in New York City and studied with Theodor Stamos. As a member of the Nantucket Artist Association, he served on the Board of Directors and Gallery Director, and had two one-man art shows. In New York City, he had a one-man show of collages at the Selected Artists Gallery on Madison Avenue. One of his mixed media pieces earned first place at the Newport (Rhode Island) Art Museum Members Show in 2011, when he was 91.

Survivors: He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Gertrude Wilson Petzel in 2009. He is survived by a daughter, Phyllis G. Joslin and her partner Dr. Nabil Malek of Portsmouth, RI; a son, Dr. David H. Petzel and his wife, Dr. Janis B. Petzel of Islesboro, ME, and two grand-daughters, Jill Baer and Anne Petzel.

Services: A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. July 1, 2016 at the Nisky Hill Cemetery in Bethlehem, PA. Arrangements are Entrusted to the JAMES FUNERAL HOME, Bethlehem. Condolences may be left at www.jamesfuneralhome.org.
