Obituary for Mary W. Evans

Mary W.  Evans
Mary W. Evan passed away on New Years Day, 2015. Her husband of fifty-one years, Daniel L. Evans, Jr.; predeceased his beloved wife in March 1996. She is survived by her four children: Gertrude, Daniel L., Sarah and Joan, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Mary was born in Peoria Illinois. She was the fourth Child of Forrest E. Weaver and Nellie Y. Weaver. She attended the University of Iowa and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater Arts and Communications in May 1942.

Shortly after her college graduation, Mary served her country as a W.A.V.E. in the United States Navy, during World War II. During her assignment at the Philadelphia Naval Yard, she met and married Daniel L. Evans, Jr. in 1945. The couple settled outside Philadelphia, and started their family. Mary pursued her love of theater by acting in community repertoire even after her children were born.

Mary was an active member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church in St. David's Pennsylvania, and opened her home for weekly prayer meetings. She was a tireless advocate for the rights of physically and mentally disabled persons. She dedicated her time and energy to volunteer work at Haverford State Hospital and Rosemont Elementary School. Mary and Daniel also opened their home for several years to house an out of state disabled child attending a special education school in the Philadelphia area.

As a result of her experience and exceptional devotion to disabled persons; at the age of 50, Mary entered Temple University School of Social Work and graduated with and M.S.W. in 1971. She was employed as a social worker by Chester County Division of Children's Services in the Juvenile Justice and Foster Care and Adoption departments. Her greatest pleasure was acting as a liaison between Children's Services and the foster care/adoptive families of Children in Chester County.

She also acted as a court-appointed guardian ad-litem to represent the best interests of children in legal proceedings. Mary retired in 1979 and moved with her husband to Bradenton , Florida. Mary was an active volunteer with Manatee County Children's Services and the Unitarian Church. Following, Daniel's death in 1996, Mary returned to Pennsylvania and lived in Allentown until her death.

Service: Relatives and friends are invited to Mary's graveside service at Pottstown Cemetery, 371 N. Hanover Street, Pottstown, PA 19464 at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 2015 and to her Memorial Service on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. in the JAMES FUNERAL HOME, 527 center Street, Bethlehem where the family will receive friends from 2:00 - 2:30 p.m. Online condolences may be made at www.jamesfuneralhome.org
